IBM Health Corps and Africa Health Placements

2015
South Africa

South Africa faces a critical shortage of health workers. For example, 84% of South Africa’s population uses public healthcare, but they have access to only 30% of the country’s doctors. Additionally, 43% of the population lives in rural areas, where only 12% of the country’s doctors practice. Africa Health Placements (AHP) is a nonprofit organization located in Johannesburg, South Africa, that is addressing these access disparities through human resource solutions. IBM Health Corps partnered with AHP to optimize the placement of scarce healthcare professionals to drive efficiency in healthcare delivery and equity in outcomes.

While on the ground, the IBM Health Corps team built a prototype of a mobile app for healthcare facility managers to use. The app can capture and collect a variety of data to model staffing and resource needs at the local and district levels. The app shares the information with the Department of Health and district managers to increase awareness of staffing needs regionally and nationwide.

The IBM Health Corps team also built a mathematical model for use by health managers and policy makers to analyze and visualize the data captured from the facilities. This model enables its users to explore opportunities to optimize staffing with existing resources. With these tools, AHP expects to improve clinical efficiency and staff experience, decrease patient wait times and provide equitable healthcare to all communities. Going forward, AHP, IBM and the South African Department of Health are planning to join forces to pilot these technology solutions in one district initially and then scale the solutions nationally. AHP also intends to use the mobile tool as it expands its services across the continent.

“Our work with IBM Health Corps shows the potential of mobile technologies at the front end in Primary Care facilities and high impact visual modelling at policy maker level to provide important insights and link key players in Healthcare management chain. Real time insights will improve decision making and planning that will have real impact on healthcare access and patient’s lives.”
