IBM Health Corps and American Cancer Society - USA

2018
USA

At the moment of diagnosis, cancer patients confront an overwhelming amount of information. Throughout their journey, patients and caregivers face critical moments of decision-making, and the complexity and volume of information increase their reliance on the Oncologist to make decisions for them. Oncologists rarely present clinical trials to patients when discussing treatment options (due to many factors outlined in this report). However, clinical trials can be a cancer patient's best option, and their participation is critical to advancing medical knowledge and improving care.

Underpinning the challenges of clinical trial enrollment is policy, misaligned incentive structures, and fragmented access to information across the ecosystem. Industry trends in clinical trials towards precision medicine will continue to increase the complexity of identifying patients for clinical trials and therefore creating an urgent need for new and innovative approaches to the problem.

For three weeks, the American Cancer Society collaborated with IBM Health Corps in an exciting project to survey the landscape of problems and barriers to identify moments of intervention and provide innovative and disruptive approaches to clinical trial enrollment.
